Day Three: Weight Loss God’s Way

Day Three: Weight Loss God’s Way

I did it – I took the photo.  It was embarrassing and I hope no-one ever sees it.  But, it is a good reminder to see – sometimes we forget to actually look at ourselves.  In our minds, it’s never as bad as what we think it is.  But when we actually see with our own eyes, then we begin to realise – hmm, perhaps it is now time I do something about this.  Today, Alisa asks if we’ve ever paid for a personal trainer – I have not.  I have been too shy and too embarrassed to even consider asking someone to help me train (just another way I have hidden away from life).  I’m too scared I can’t do what is asked or that (or perhaps and that…) I will make a fool of myself.

Has anyone every told you that Jesus is the BEST personal trainer?  Well…He is…and it’s true!  He will never leave you or forget about you.  He will never scold or shame you, and he knows how to get you from where you are to where you are supposed to go.  He knows what it is like to struggle and overcome.  He knows the way through what challenges you.  He is the truth that overcomes your lies.  And all the life you are hungering for is found in him.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

And here is the thing that I am slowly learning in my life – God cares.  Not just to save us for eternity, but he cares about the details of our lives now.

Matthew 10:29-31 HCSB

Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent.  But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.   So don’t be afraid therefore; you are worth more than many sparrows.

If that is true – why do so many of us battle with so many issues (body issues, eating, health, addictions, etc.).  Because we don’t believe – truly believe – and we don’t trust God.  What if you never ever lost the weight you needed to lose, even if you did everything right and followed every biblical principle you could?  Would you still trust God then?  And that’s the point – sometimes God allows these issues to prolong themselves in our lives, so that we can trust – trust beyond what our eyes can see, our ears can hear, our feelings and thoughts…  Trust.

It’s all about God.  Your body is God’s job.  He cares about what you do with your body.  Your weight is not about your weight.  Your desire for less body fat is not about fat.  Food is not the problem.  All of these things are just symptoms to something deeper going on in your heart.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”- Matthew 6:21

Alisa talks about “stinking thinking” – anything that takes us away from receiving our comfort and grace and peace from God, including eating, TV, laziness, etc.  All these things we think we will find comfort in, but no matter how large we are, or how thin we are, our comfort and our peace and our grace can only ever come from God Himself.  And it will come – because the number of hairs on our head is counted, and He cares for the birds, and He will care for us so much more.  How do I know?  Quite simply – the bible tells me so.  The key is to trust Him – based on His word – and to follow His guidelines, again based on His word.

Go get your Bible and start reading it today – for yourself!

We could use some safeguards to keep us from dumpster-diving into our stinking thinking.  We need something (or someone) to help us stay focused and to refocus back on God!  Triggers from the world are all over the place.  How about we set our own triggers and traps for Kingdom thinking, acting, and living?  It’s important we set a “trigger” to remind ourselves to refocus back on the One who knows what’s really going on underneath the commotion of our mental and emotional waves.  We need new neuropathways burned into our brains.  We could all use some right cues so we can begin to respond to old problems in new ways.  Let’s set some holy traps for the next time doubts, lies, and temptation try to steal the free life we have in Christ.  God’s word, what he has to say to us, is the ultimate safeguard for a wandering and weary heart.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. – Matthew 6:33

  1. Create a trigger point! Write Matthew 6:33 (or any bible verse of your choice) on several pieces of paper or 3×5 cards.  Hang in the following tripper points: on the refrigerator door, in the pantry, on the scale (covering the numbers), in your car (for my fast-food, drive-thru eaters), or any other place where you know you need to be intersected.

What I like to do – is to put reminders on my phone, so that now and then a reminder will pop up with the verse.  I like what Alisa’s says – we need to stay focused.  My verse will be:

Matthew 6:25-34 NIV

Do Not Worry

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?   Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes?  See how the flowers of the field grow.  They do not labor or spin.   Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.   Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.
